Calgary: 500m Ladies

You may have seen the article on the new timing system, and that I was told that not much could go wrong this time... but in the first pair of the day, the ladies' 500m, the times didn't appear on the scoreboard. For one time that  wasn't a problem, because Hedvig Bjelkevik had just fallen coming out of the first turn, but for Shihomi Shinya, who opened in 10.26, it was a problem. One more pair started, Chris Witty, who did only 39.28, if that was correct, and Jessica Smith, whose time wasn't shown either. The third pair, Canada's Brittany Schussler and USA Rebekah Bradford were already ready to start, when a two-minute break was announced, probably to fix the problem.

Not-skaters

Anni Friesinger is not starting today because of illness. She has a serious flue, which started Thursday night, and will certainly not race any distance this weekend. It's just to be hoped that she will recover soon and be able to skate in Salt Lake, if not for her personal joy, then because the money the German skating Federation receives is based not on the World Sprints or Allround, but on how many skaters finished high in the Single Distance Championships.

Yes, there is hope for the future of US Speedskating.

Trevor Marsicano won the bronze medal in the Junior Worlds in Innsbruck. He is 17 years of age and comes from the city of New York, close to the Hudson River. He used to do short track.
