Two forerunners have the privilege to race in a 38.61 and 38.67 in front of a full ice stadion and off the championships goes, with Catherine Raney and Mari Hemmer in the first pair. In the stadion there is an orange department and a red department, and a white one and... they are skating.
Hemmer opens 11.57 and Raney 11.49. But it is Hemmer who looks strong and attacks through the inner to beat Raney with 41.07 against 41.73. Bravo Norway! Only 0.07 above her pb. She may be lucky to skate here - Maren Haugli is injured, we wish her good luck - but is trying to make the best of it. Mattscherodt-Valkenburg. Valeknburg opens 11.25, Mattscherodt 11.42. We get two pbs, 40.28 Valkenburg and 41.21 Mattscherodt. Hughes - Lee: 11.53-41.14 and 11.86-42.10. Ringsred- Ishino now. Ringsred qualified because Maria Lamb was dqued at the Regional Qualifier. Although some in the US would prefer Anna to give up her spot, she declined, but I guess it doesn't make you feel good. Both open 11.6 and Ishino skates 42,09; Ringsred 42,30. Tabata and Wójcicka both skate 11.2 in the first 100m, a big misser on the final straight by the Polish champion, and she finishes behind Tabata, whose 40.48 is slower than the time of Valkenburg (who is coached again not by her own coach Wim den Elsen, even in the World Championships!). Wojcicka 40.93. The Germans start: Pechstein, Anschütz. Wooden rattles in the stands. The fastest opening, 10.91 for the home favourite. 10.95 Anschütz. The latter battles to win the race with a small difference, 39.98; Pechstein 40.04. Of course, we can expect some changes later based on photofinish. Sablikova starts innerlane against Abramova, who opens 11.11 (S. 11.44) , and looks strong on the back stretch. Abramova finishes just in second place, 40.00. Sablikova 40.92. Sablikova not very happy when she passes here afterwards. Opitz now with Likhachova in pair 8. The German rattles sound again, but Likhachova is the strongest, 11.20 and 40,45. Opitz opens 11.44 and only manages 41,19, which is almost a second behind her pb. A Canadian pair. A good time for Christine Nesbitt, 10.88 opening, 39.02 is a second faster than Pechstein. Groves has the second time, 11.21 and 39,64, and with her strong longer distances, she has given the first blow to Pechstein. Wüst and Van Deutekom, Both open 11.0 (3. W, 6 vD), Wust has the second time, winning on Groves, losing on Nesbitt: 39.27. Van Deutekom has the same time as Groves, 39.64. Leenstra-Schussler now. Fast opening for Leenstra, 10.99. Schussler only 11.49. The junior skates 39.72, also faster than Anschütz. Schussler 40,75. Last pair: Fei Wang and Katja Lobysheva. 11.01 the Russian, 11.05 Wang. Lobysheva, winner of the 500 in the E.Ch., is beaten here, not just by pairmate Wang, who finishes in 39.57 in third place. Nesbitt takes the 500, Wüst is the best European on this distance. Lobysheva only 39.70. And now we'll wait for the corrections. Among the top-10: Nesbitt 39.03, Wüst 39.28, Van Deutekom 39.65, both Pechstein and Abramova have 40.01. |
