The 2014 PyeongChang Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Bid Committee appointed two newly crowned men’s World Speed Skating Champions (long-track), Lee Kang-suk and Lee Kyu-hyuk, as honorary ambassadors, on March 20.

Lee Kang-suk won a gold medal and broke the world record in the 500 metre event at the ISU World Single Distances Speed Skating Championships in Salt Lake City, USA on 9 March 2007. He was also a bronze medallist in the 500 metres at the 2006 Torino Olympic Winter Games.

Lee Kyu-hyuk won the ISU World Sprint Speed Skating Championships on 21 January 2007 in Hamar, Norway. In 2001 he broke the 1500 metre world record.  

Lee Kang-suk said: “As a speed skater I know well that athletes perform at their best when the conditions at an event are right - the venue, transport and accommodation. I am very confident that if PyeongChang hosts the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Games athletes from all over the world will have a wonderful experience and perform to the best of their ability.”

Han Seung-Soo, Chairman of PyeongChang 2014 said: “We are delighted to welcome these two outstanding Korean athletes as bid ambassadors. By their world-class performances they demonstrate that Korean winter sport is developing fast. If PyeongChang is granted the honour of hosting the 2014 Games we are committed to helping winter sport to expand across Asia and beyond.”

The PyeongChang Bid Committee has now appointed a total of 55 international and Korean honorary ambassadors, including Kim Yun-A, who is competing at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Tokyo, Japan this week.
