Simon van Beek is a skater from Switzerland. His father is Dutch, his mother Spanish. A short interview between his 500 and 1000m race in Heerenveen.
"Don't expect much of the last lap of my 1000m. I'm ill. A 500 I can do regardless, but the 1000m will be hard. My best Heerenveen time is 1:15.3 but that will not be possible, I fear." "My Dutch father has nothing to do with the fact that I skate. I was an inline skater, and when I participated in the Open Swiss Chamionship, there was a coach who asked if I wanted to give ice skating a try. I started that in 2001 in Zürich. That is how I started." "My goal for this year is to skate the 500m below 37 seconds. The World Cup season is now over for me, but I want to go to Calgary for the Oval Finale. This year I trained in Calgary from August to Christmas, together with two other Swiss skaters, Rico Litscher and Jan Caflisch, in the Oval Link Program, with a Romanian coach (Seulan). I hope I can do that again next year." "I finished school in June, and after the skating season I will look for a job. The finances for my travelling come partly from the Federation and mainly from my parents." "I can choose myself in what competitions I race." |
